Seven a.m. Friday

As I was doing a radio interview to promote the Woodbridge en Plein Air painting competition and exhibition. The sun seemed to explode over Bruny Island right into my lounge room, so I just had to rush out and grab my pastels.

Looking east from the top of Woodbridge Hill the view is stunning. On a clear day one can see over the island to the Tasman Peninsula where the infamous Penal Colony of Port Arthur is located.

Waiting

I painted this small picture due to popular demand of this particular type of scene. There seems to be a strong feeling of nostalgia connected to the single dinghy left on the beach.

Move Over

Watching the seagulls arguing over the same perch, I imagined this was what the bird in flight was screaming at his feathered friend who was taking up all the available space on the Woodbridge jetty capstan.

Hint of Autumn

This stand of Poplar trees is on the left as one approaches Woodbridge along the Channel Highway from Kettering, they clearly have been there for many years and always look to welcome all who pass by.

North from Peppermint Bay

This scene and the next painting was done from the small beach at the end of Martins Road. According to the locals this spot has been a favourite swimming place for many families, the old gum has been used as a boat anchor and a barbeque shelter once too often, but has had the tenacity to live on.

Again the dinghy scene, here we see the required drift wood all piled up ready for the barbeque, on the horizon we can see Mt Morgan which is situated on South Bruny Island.

Last Light at Cygnet

Although only a few kilometres away Cygnet has a totally different feeling to the Channel, here I have attempted to depict this in the stillness of the water and the colours of the land.

Home on the Farm

Originally painted for the Latrobe Australia Day Art Exhibition, this painting was bought by the Woodbridge Community to give to our local Police Constable when he left the area, as he said it reminded him of Woodbridge.

The old and the new

I always enjoy painting birds and animals but when finished I felt this painting with the swan with the little cygnets alone, appeared as rather a cliché, so the old dinghy was added as an after thought.

Last Light

This sunset was painted from one I saw while on a trip to Western Australia, the boat wasn’t there but one could see how the light would have created a golden mirage out of any vessel that came by, I added the boat to show this effect.

Mates

My children and grandchildren were the inspiration for this scene of youngsters building sand castles. No particular children were depicted, it could have been one or two of any of them, they are mostly adults now but I remember sunny days on the beach watching them play.
